Most people who have reached or passed adolescence have suffered at least slightly from the unsightliness and irritation of acne. A few lucky people seem rarely or never to be touched by this problem. For the majority, acne is something that they have to deal with, perhaps mainly as teens, perhaps at least off and on throughout their lives. Acne is caused when the hair follicles in our skin get blocked. No one knows precisely why these blockages occur, nor why they are more severe in some people than in others, even in different members of the same family. It also is not known why acne commonly first occurs after puberty, although the sebaceous glands grow considerably at this time, which could be a factor. The oil produced by hair follicles, called sebum, is normally beneficial because it helps prevent the skin from drying and limits skin infections. But when sebum can't drain, it builds up and actually becomes a culture medium for bacteria.

As pimples develop, the skin may become inflamed. This inflammation may last for a time even after a pimple bursts or heals (you shouldn't squeeze pimples, because squeezing can lead to more severe skin infections). In severe cases, scarring may take place, caused by imperfections in the inflammatory response to infection. It is not known why some people are more susceptible to acne scarring than others. Fortunately, most acne spots and inflammation heal over time, but the healing process can take months.

Benzoyl Peroxide (Topical)
Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic. It reduces the number of surface skin bacteria, but does not cause bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
It also reduces the number of yeasts on the surface of the skin.
Benzoyl peroxide is also an oxidizing agent and it drains comedones (mild acne) on the skin surface and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Calendula Extract
The flavonoids, found in high amounts in calendula, account for much of its anti-inflammatory activity; triterpene saponins may also be important. Calendula also contains carotenoids. Investigations into anticancer and antiviral actions of calendula are continuing. At this time, there is insufficient evidence to recommend clinical use of calendula for cancer. There is evidence suggesting use of calendula for some viral infections. The constituents responsible for these actions are not entirely clear.

Goldenseal Extract (Hydrastis canadensis) Goldenseal is used as a treatment for irritations and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts. Goldenseal is commonly used topically for skin and eye infections and has been used historically as a mouthwash to help heal canker sores.

Aloe Vera Extract
Aloe vera has a long history as a safe, effective medicine and skin care aid. For over 6,000 years, people have benefited from the remarkable relief that the plant can bring to a wide range of ailments. The ancient Egyptians used Aloe to heal battle wounds and cure infections. Writings of the early Greeks show how they valued it for relieving blisters, burns and leg ulcers as well as bowel and stomach disorders.

Lemon Peal Extract
New studies on a monoterpene found in Lemon Peel called "limonene"
show that it very effectively prevents individuals from developing abnormal growths on their skin. Limonene also has demonstrated prevention efficacy in preclinical models of breast and colon abnormal growths. But the most promising use of Lemon Peel is indicated in recent research, which shows that this herb may help reduce the occurrence of squamous cell skin cancers. Further study is still required to support this research.

Chamomile Extract
Chamomile flower CO2-extract from German chamomile. This product is best suitable for treating inflammation and irritation of skin and mucous membranes. Clinical efficacy is comparable to hydrocortisone.

Lavender Extract
An antiseptic and anti-inflammatory that is effective in treating acne, dermatitis and oily skin.

Green Tea Extract
Green Tea extract works on the cellular level of the skin to reduce inflammation and toxicity. Both black and green tea extracts worked well, although green tea proved more effective, at least in some patients.

Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid has been nicknamed by the press as the "key to the fountain of youth" because it has been noted that at least some people who ingest a lot of it in their diets tend to live to ripe old ages.

Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E)
Also know as Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a major antioxidant and the primary defense against lipid peroxidation. Vitamin E is particularly important in protecting the body's cells from free radical and oxidative damage.

Panthenol (Vitamin B5)
More familiar as Vitamin B5. In a living cell, panthenol is converted to pantothenic acid, which then becomes an important part of the compound "Coenzyme A", which is important in cellular metabolism.

Carbomer
Classified as a synthetic polymer and used as an emulsion stabilizer as well as an aqueous viscosity-increasing agent.

Glycerin
